Why Mounts Botanical Garden works so well for a proposal
Mounts Botanical Garden is in West Palm Beach, just minutes from many of Palm Beach's better-known attractions, but once you're walking through the gardens, it feels removed from the city. And that's exactly what we like about it for a Palm Beach proposal.
According to Mounts Botanical Garden, the property is a 20-acre living museum with 25 unique gardens and approximately 7,000 plant species. That variety is important from a photography perspective because you're not limited to one backdrop.
You can have a proposal surrounded by tropical foliage and then, after the YES, move somewhere completely different for your engagement photographs.
Our biggest tip: don't choose the prettiest spot—choose the right spot. This is something we tell our proposal clients all the time. When you're searching online for Mounts Botanical Garden proposal ideas, it's tempting to look at photographs, choose your favorite backdrop and say, "That's where I'll do it." We think about things such as:
How you and your partner will naturally arrive there
Whether the location makes sense as part of your outing
How much space there is around you
Where your photographer can position themselves
What the background will look like in photographs
Where you'll go immediately afterward
How busy the area might be
What the light will be doing at that time of day
The proposal needs to make sense as an experience, not just as a photograph. That's particularly important when you're trying to keep the proposal a surprise.

Mounts currently describes 25 unique garden areas, and its private-event information highlights several specific spaces, including the Gazebo Garden, Rainbow Garden and Great Lawn.
The Gazebo Garden
The Gazebo Garden has a more intimate, romantic feel, with a gazebo, center walkway and floral borders. If your idea of a garden proposal in Palm Beach involves a defined focal point and classic romantic surroundings, this type of setting can work beautifully.
Rainbow Garden
Rainbow Garden has an open lawn near the bridge to Shade Island, surrounded by colorful plants, trees and flowers. From a photography perspective, that gives you a little more breathing room and a completely different look from the more enclosed garden areas.
The Great Lawn
The Great Lawn is the larger, more open option and sits across from the Butterfly Garden, with Lake Orth in the background.
What we've learned from photographing a real Mounts Botanical Garden proposal

That proposal is also a good example of something we recommend whenever possible, don't stop photographing when the ring goes on.
The YES is only the beginning
One of the biggest mistakes we see with proposals is treating the proposal itself as the entire photography session.
The actual proposal might last 30 seconds. The emotion afterward can last for hours.
There are hugs. The ring inspection. The laughing. And then the realization: We're engaged! Those moments are incredibly meaningful.
After Brycen proposed to Elois, we continued photographing the couple around Mounts Botanical Garden. The result wasn't simply a few photographs of someone getting down on one knee—it became a collection of engagement photographs from the day they got engaged.
Where should the photographer stand?
This is one of the parts of a surprise proposal that couples don't always think about. You know you're going to propose. Your photographer knows you're going to propose. Your partner does not. Our job is to make ourselves as inconspicuous as possible while still getting the photographs.
Before the proposal, we think about:
Your approach: How are you getting to the proposal location?
Your cue: What exactly tells us the proposal is about to happen?
Your positioning: Where can we photograph the moment without standing directly in your partner's line of sight?
Your exit: What happens immediately after you propose?
Timing matters more than you might think
When someone asks us for the best time to propose at Mounts Botanical Garden, our answer isn't automatically "golden hour." Of course we're thinking about beautiful light, but we're also thinking about the Garden's hours, your route through the property, the location you've chosen and what you want to do afterward.
Mounts currently lists its public hours as Tuesday through Sunday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., with last entry at 3 p.m. The Garden is closed Mondays and some holidays. That means your ideal proposal time has to work within the Garden's actual operating schedule.
And because this is South Florida, weather deserves a seat at the planning table too. A beautiful proposal isn't worth much if you're rushing because you've miscalculated the timing.
November through June can be especially beautiful
Mounts' event materials specifically note that November through June can be particularly desirable because more of the flowering plants are in exceptional bloom during those months.
That doesn't mean you can't have a gorgeous Mounts Botanical Garden proposal at another time of year.
It simply gives couples another useful factor to consider when choosing their date.
Professional photography needs to be planned in advance
Mounts Botanical Garden currently states that advance reservations are required for photo shoots, including engagement and wedding photography. It also specifically asks those planning professional, staged or commercial photo shoots to contact the Garden regarding availability and details.
If you're planning a Mounts Botanical Garden proposal, make sure the photography arrangements are confirmed with the Garden ahead of time. The Garden also states that drones are prohibited on the property. Rules and fees can change, so we always recommend checking the Garden's current information when you're planning your date.
What does a Mounts Botanical Garden proposal cost?
For regular visitors, Mounts currently lists admission at $20 for adults, $18 for seniors, college students and military with ID, and $13 for ages 6–17; children under six and Mounts members are free.
Professional photography is a separate consideration because Mounts requires advance reservations for photo shoots. And if you're considering a larger private event rather than simply proposing during a visit, the Garden has separate wedding and private-event arrangements for spaces such as the Gazebo Garden, Rainbow Garden and Great Lawn.
Mounts Botanical Garden vs. a Palm Beach beach proposal
We photograph both, and they're completely different experiences. A beach proposal gives you ocean views, Palm Beach's coastal atmosphere, classic South Florida scenery. Mounts gives you tropical gardens, more variety in backgrounds, a more intimate, nature-filled atmosphere.

5. Plan what happens after the YES
This is our favorite tip. Don't make the proposal the end of the experience. Plan dinner, or have a hotel surprise waiting. Or simply wander through the Garden together while you're newly engaged.
