There is something especially romantic about proposing beside a lighthouse. At Bill Baggs Cape Florida State Park on Key Biscayne, you have much more than a beautiful backdrop. You have a nearly 200-year-old lighthouse, the Atlantic Ocean, Biscayne Bay, tropical landscape and one of Miami's most peaceful natural settings — all just a short drive from the city.
We know this location firsthand because we recently photographed a real surprise proposal at the Cape Florida Lighthouse.
A Real Proposal at the Cape Florida Lighthouse
For this proposal, the goal wasn't simply to find a pretty place to take photographs. We wanted the location, timing and movement of the proposal to feel natural so the surprise would remain intact.
That is one of the things we have learned from photographing surprise proposals around Miami: the most beautiful location isn't necessarily the best proposal location.
You have to think about where your partner will naturally want to walk, where you can stand without giving away the surprise, where your photographer can position themselves and what the light will look like when you actually get down on one knee.
At Bill Baggs, those details matter. The lighthouse provides an unmistakable Miami backdrop, but the surrounding park gives you much more flexibility than simply standing directly in front of the tower.
After the proposal, there are opportunities to continue around the lighthouse grounds and capture photographs together, turning the proposal into a complete experience rather than just one photograph of the moment.
Why Bill Baggs Is Such a Special Place to Propose
Bill Baggs Cape Florida State Park is located at the southern end of Key Biscayne, but it feels remarkably removed from the energy of Miami. The centerpiece is the historic Cape Florida Lighthouse, first built in 1825. It is the oldest standing structure in Miami-Dade County and has survived hurricanes, erosion and significant moments in Florida history.
The lighthouse originally served an important navigational purpose, helping ships navigate the Florida reef. Today, it creates one of the most recognizable proposal settings in Miami.
From the lighthouse area, you can experience views across the Atlantic Ocean, Biscayne Bay and Key Biscayne. The surrounding park also includes beach, nature trails, native vegetation and areas that feel much more secluded than many of Miami's better-known proposal locations.
Can You Propose at the Lighthouse?
Yes — but there is an important distinction between proposing at the lighthouse and proposing inside the lighthouse tower.
The Cape Florida Lighthouse is open for tours during designated hours, currently Thursday through Monday from 10 a.m. to noon. Visitors who climb the tower must be able to navigate 109 spiral steps and narrow spaces.
The park itself is open from 8 a.m. until sunset. For a surprise proposal, this distinction is important. If your plan depends on being inside or on top of the lighthouse, you need to plan around the official tour schedule. If your priority is beautiful proposal photography and sunset light, the surrounding lighthouse grounds can give you considerably more flexibility.
The Best Time to Propose at Bill Baggs
There isn't one perfect time for every couple. For photography, we particularly like the later afternoon because it allows you to combine the proposal with portraits afterward while taking advantage of softer light.
And then there is sunset. Florida State Parks specifically highlights the sunsets over Biscayne Bay at Bill Baggs, with the park manager recommending a west-facing view toward Stiltsville for the best sunset light.
That makes the area particularly appealing for couples who want a proposal followed by romantic sunset portraits. However, sunset also means planning around the park's closing time.
The park closes at sunset, so we don't recommend treating the sunset itself as an afterthought. Your proposal, family photographs, couple's portraits and exit from the park all need to fit comfortably within the available window.
What Time of Year Is Best?
For a Miami proposal, the cooler and drier months generally make planning an outdoor experience easier. October through April can offer more comfortable temperatures and lower humidity than the summer months, although Miami weather can change at any time of year.
Summer can still produce beautiful proposal evenings, but you need to account for heat, humidity and the possibility of afternoon thunderstorms. There is another seasonal consideration that many visitors don't think about: wildlife protection.
Bill Baggs is a natural coastal environment and the beach is used by nesting sea turtles. Florida's main sea turtle nesting period runs approximately from May through October, and visitors are asked to avoid disturbing nests, hatchlings and nesting turtles.
If your proposal includes the beach, this is particularly important. We always recommend respecting marked nests and following the park's current rules rather than treating the beach simply as a photo location.
One Thing Proposers Should Know About Weekends
Bill Baggs can become extremely busy on weekends and holidays. Florida State Parks specifically warns visitors that the park can reach capacity and close temporarily once capacity is reached.
You don't want to arrive at the park with your photographer, your partner and your carefully planned timeline only to discover that you cannot enter.
For a proposal, we recommend allowing extra arrival time and checking the park's current entry information before the day. If your schedule is flexible, a weekday can also make the overall experience feel more relaxed.
Where Should You Actually Propose?
This is where having someone who has photographed proposals at the location can make a difference. There are several ways to approach Bill Baggs.
In Front of the Lighthouse: This is the obvious choice — and for good reason. The lighthouse immediately tells the story of where you are. It is particularly effective if you want the proposal photograph to clearly show the Cape Florida Lighthouse in the background.
Around the Lighthouse Grounds: You don't necessarily have to stand directly in front of the lighthouse. Moving around the grounds can create a more natural-looking proposal and give your photographer different angles.
Near the Water: The surrounding landscape provides another option if you want the proposal to feel more like a romantic Miami beach experience with the lighthouse incorporated into the story. This can work particularly well when the proposal is followed by photographs around the park.

For this proposal, the photography was planned around the surprise — including where the photographer could be positioned, what direction the couple would approach from and how we could continue photographing naturally after the question was asked.
The best reaction photographs happen when your partner doesn't realize they are being photographed specifically for a proposal. After the question, however, everything changes.
